Call (618) 235-1500 :: Get Sciatic Nerve Pain Relief, Call Esquire Sports Medicine IL. We treat patients with sciatic nerve pain on a regular basis.

Sciatica refers to pain that radiates down the path of the sciatic nerve, which branches from your lower back through your hips, buttocks, and down each leg. This can be a constant and debilitating condition or an occasional mild exacerbation. In either case, our mission is to remedy the underlying condition.

Sciatic Nerve Treatment

Symptoms of Sciatica

Patients often describe the pain caused by sciatica as being a dull ache to a feeling of electrical shocks in the region. Some of the other symptoms many have include:

  • Tingling
  • Burning
  • Pain in the back, buttocks, hip, or lower extremities
  • Difficulty walking or muscle weakness
  • Leg numbness or pins and needles
  • Burning sensation
  • Foot numbness or weakness

To understand and treat this pain, it must first be understood that sciatica is not a condition, but rather a symptom of one.

What Causes Sciatica?

The sciatica is a nerve located in the lower back. The compression of this nerve causes acute and chronic pain. Any number of things can cause this to happen including:

  • Car accidents
  • Pregnancy
  • Bulging and herniated disc
  • Bone spur

It is also caused by piriformis syndrome, where a muscle at the lower part of the spine is injured causing it to spasm and pinch the cluster of sciatic nerves.

How is Sciatica Diagnosed?

Proper diagnosis of the cause of sciatica is an essential part of relieving the pain. The medical team at Esquire Sports Medicine IL will first look over your medical history and give you a thorough physical examination. Scanning may also be needed to pinpoint the source. This is an important step as some of the pain management techniques employed by Esquire.

Treatment for Sciatica

Treatment of sciatica pain is dependent on its cause and will probably include several different therapies for maximum results. We are equipped for the following treatments of sciatica and the expertise needed to administer them:

  • Ultrasound therapy: Sound waves are used to penetrate the deep tissue of the lower back and increase circulation. This will reduce the muscle spasms that are pinching the nerves as well as improve the stiffness, swelling, and pain.
  • Cold Laser Therapy: This also penetrates the muscle and soft tissue to reduce the inflammation and remove the pressure that is being put onto the nerve.
  • Spinal Manipulation: This is the mainstay of chiropractic care. When Dr. Brunkhorst applies spinal manipulation it is a proven way to reduce spinal fixation.
