Sports Medicine
At Esquire Sports Medicine, our doctors are experts in Sports Medicine. This includes identifying athletic injuries suffered by the smallest little league player to college and pro athletes. It doesn’t matter if the injury occurred while playing professional, school, or even recreational sports. We are capable of finding the source of your pain and injury, repairing it, and getting you back in the game.
There is a wide variety of sports you can be involved in. With that comes a wide range of injuries that can affect nearly any part of your body. We have years of experience in knowing how to identify your injury and how to treat it. Whether it’s due to repetitive use such as elbow injuries in pitchers, or an accident on the soccer field, we have seen it all and we know how to treat it.
Some of the most common sports injuries we see and treat on a daily basis include:
- Sprains: Ligaments are pieces of tissue that connect two bones together in a joint. When these ligaments are overstretched or torn, it results in a sprain. One of the most common sprain injuries we see is an ankle sprain. This occurs when the foot turns inward and stretches the outer ligaments too far. A severe sprain needs a medical evaluation.
- Tendinitis: This is the inflammation of a tendon that is attached to a joint. This is an injury we often see in the knee with runners. Not only is this a painful sports injury, but it affects the range of motion in the knee, making playing a sport impossible.
- Meniscus Tears: A meniscus tear is when trauma causes the protective cartilage in the joint to tear. This is more serious for athletes who put a lot of strain on the knees. Not only is this a painful injury, but your knee can actually lock or give way when trying to walk. Diagnosis will be confirmed by having an MRI of the knee and treatment will include pain management, rehabilitation, and in some cases surgery.
- Rotator Cuff Injury: Your rotator cuff is made up of muscles and tendons that keep the ball of your upper arm in the socket of your shoulder. It helps you raise and rotate your arm. Sports players who perform repetitive motions on a regular basis are especially susceptible to this type of injury. Baseball players, tennis players, and weight lifters are some sports where rotator cuff injuries often occur. Treatment includes physical therapy to improve the overall flexibility and strength of these tendons and muscles surrounding your shoulder joint.
These are just a few of the different types of sports injuries we are trained to treat at Esquire Sports Medicine. There is a wide range of others, some minor and some much more serious. The one thing each of them has in common is that they are painful and they will restrict your ability to play sports and function normally.
